Tabas (Persian: طبس), center of Tabas County, is located in central Iran, 950 kilometers southeast of Tehran, in the province of Yazd. It is a desert city with lots of date and citrus trees. It has a public garden, (Baghe-golshan), 300 years old, that has beautiful water fountains. It has a railroad station, airport and two universities. Tabas was also stricken by a destructive earthquake on September 16, 1978 that left around 22000 dead. The earthquake was measured between 7.5 and 7.9 on the Richter scale. Since then, the city has been rebuilt with many new streets, parks and public buildings.
