The village is about 12 Km from San Christobal and counts around 45000 habitants. The village is in the highlands at an altitude of 2200 metres. All the habitants are Tzotzils indeginous. The Tzoztzils are part of the Mayan Culture and were specifics from this highland region. Tzotzil means “people of bat”. The Tzotzils were exploited for long time Europeans as labourers.
The town enjoys unique autonomous status within Mexico. No outside police or military are allowed in the village. Chamulas have their own police force.
