Okay okay I know this may come across as silly but I have never traveled on my own and it seems very difficult. Can anyone give me a simple step by step on how exactly you go to a foreign country and survive without joining a tourist group? I always worry that I will be trespassing or that I am not allowed to be there.
I did travel to Europe a few years ago and loved it but I was with 40 other people and all accomodations and food and sites were taken care of. I was just along for the ride.
I really appreciate the how tos you might offer!

hii,
well you will get different suggestions from different people.but one thing is clear,
if you plan a travel ,first ask ur self what exactly you want ,i mean you want to see old and historical things or culture or landscape or ....
then collect all the data from net or books or you can ask some one from that place,e.g abt india i can provide lots of minute details.
plan abt money as how much expenditure will occur, accomodation, food, others things,medicines..
if u plan well things will be easy..
but most important thing is ...BE CAREFUL WHEN U R OUT OF UR COUNTRY ..
and always remember the embassy contact number..
thats all...travelling is a adventure and do take risk.

Hey,
I understand it seems to be very difficult in the beginning. It also bring initial problems,I had lot of them when I was all alone in LA.
Few tips which might help you.
1.Take the police number, doctors number, hotel number of that country.
2.If your country Embassy is there, take their contact number also.
3.Leave your number with someone so that they can also trace you.
4.Try not to go alone at night in lonely and dark place(as I did one in LA and police told never to ask any stranger about the way,its too dangerous)
5.Europe is bit safe,so read some books like lonely planet before moving to some new country.
6.Once you think you taken all necessary precautions, enjoy yout trip.Life is like travelling. You never know what you have to encounter in next turn. All you need is strength to face happiness and pain alike.
Best of luck. --- Amber.

Hey there smiler,
I think your best bet is to get to a reputable Backpackers Hostel. Go with an open heart and mind and a boat load of common sence.
The backpackers if they are worth there salt should be loaded with info and then you can make a judjement call, if you wanna strike it out on your own for real or if you wanna tag along with the travellers you are bound to meet in the Hostels . After all some things are great to experience on your own but sometimes things are better shared .
Good Luck and Like Ravi says Take risks man!! just ,take educated risks. be safe.

You have gotten some good info from the above replies.
I travel solo most of the time. Usually I start out by doing as much research as I can about the place or places I am heading to. Always be flexible once you are there. You don't have to be on a set schedule. Lots of info on the internet as to land border crossings, bus timetables and prices, train timetables and prices, good guesthouses, restaurants and more. You will be surprised as to the number of peopleyou run in to also traveling on their own.
Going without a tourgroup allows you to decide how long you stay in one place. Also, by staying in or near the guesthouses you can meet other travelers and possibly head off to do something you hadn't even thought of.
Bring a guidebook to help you with accom and land travel.
Keep an open mind, have patience, be polite and smile. Those things have always helped me along when traveling in Asia. Most of all, have fun!

Congratulations on your choice to travel solo! For many years I was terrified of going it alone; yet when I finally did, it truly transformed my life. You can read a very detailed and photo-rich account of my first solo trip abroad here: http://www.whereisliz.com/italy/index.html
There's lots of tips and links to other resources there, too. If you allow room to be flexible and explore, you will see and do things you never imagined, and make great new friends along the way as well.
Best of luck to you!
