This is another in my series about holiday planning – but your answers are even more important this time. Even the minimalist planner usually welcomes some knowledge of how to get from an airport somewhere abroad to where they might conceivably want to stay.
I had always believed that a sort of database of where to find time-tables for planes, boats, trains and buses would be a huge boon for a travel site – until I spent some hours starting one on another site. Hardly anybody else contributed to it and I never had any evidence that anybody used it! At least one larger site would appear to share my view about the potential usefulness of time-tables.
Perhaps it’s true that some people never learn – and I should be prepared to spend some more hours doing it here BUT [proving I can learn something!] only if there are replies to this [please use the ‘contact davidx’ below to avoid cramming up he forum] indicating that a significant number of others would welcome such a resource and that people in other parts of the world would be prepared to provide information.
So over to you.

David,
I don't plan a lot. But I do plan or rather try to find out beforehand how to get from the airport to the city and if there are any hotels close to the airport.
It would be nice if we had on Globo a special section: hotels close to airports.
A databank with links to timetables etc would be very useful, I have my own which I sent to myself as an e-mail, so that I can access it while way.
It would be helpful to have timetables next to reports, tips etc here on Globo, or perhaps as a section inthe tips.

Planning is important sometimes.
Specially if you have just a few days, if you are in a hurry or if is a dificult place and you want to know how to do it beforehand.
Websites to find train conections, airport maps and comunications with the cities and Ferry lines!! That sounds as a VERY interesting site or option.

I have to be honest that when I travel, the only thing I usually try to find out is how much the taxi/bus fare should be to my hotel/downtown so that I don't get ripped off.
I travelled to China in 2001 with an American friend and I knew from travel guides that the fare to our hotel should have been about 70-90 reminbi. I made the mistake of letting my friend ride up front and he didn't tell the driver to turn on the metre. When we got to our hotel, the driver wanted 300 reminbi, which my friend just paid without argument! Afterwards, he came and asked all of us for 75 reminbi each! After that, he didn't ride in the front anymore...
In general, I tend to ask for help at the airport info desk and ask them for advice on how to get to my hotel. In different locations, I've had them book hotels, write directions to the hotel in the local language, tell the cab driver how to get there, etc. This may seem a little fly by the seat of your pants for some, but it works fine for me.
I tend to find that between guides like Lonely Planet and the internet, I can usually find a hotel close to the airport if I so desire, but in general, I find most major cities have their airports out on the outskirts, so I prefer to book a hotel more centrally located, instead of staying by a noisy airport and spending an hour each day 'commuting' to sights. I find it also saves me money on taxis/buses too. --- "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." – Mark Twain

Hi,
when I travel, I always check the official site of the airport, they have usually pretty good information about how to get to the city centre and how much it costs.
About the hotels, it's really easy to find a hotel online, I've never had any problems with it.
But I'd really welcome a website with timetables of trains and busses in various country. --- Bara

I agree that it would be a great tool to have at your disposal, but I certainly wouldn't want to be the one to create it or maintain it. There are a lot of airports out there...
