I'm going to be teaching a workshop this fall called "Packing for your Perfect Adventure" and I'm asking for your best packing advice...

What items do you take because you can't live without them, or that add a meaningful dimension to your travels? I'm looking for both tried and true advice as well as new things you've discovered--I'm interested in hearing about what works (and what doesn't work) for you.

As I develop the course materials and curriculum, I will be happy to share with you here some of my best discoveries. One good one is the Universal Packing List http://upl.codeq.info/index.jsp

It's a web form where you enter in a few details about yourself and your trip, and it generates a custom packing list based on your preferences. Try it!

I put together my own Travel Guide in a soft sided 5" x 8" binder, using copied pages from various guide books (Lonely Plant, Rough's, Frommer). I print maps from the internet, language phrase pages from library books, a list of addresses for sending postcards, copies of passports (me and whomever I am traveling with), emergency contacts, itineraries, whatever else, indexed. The size is small enough to carry and I don't have to bring a thick book that has stuff I don't need.

Other Items: polar fleece hoodie, sock liners (cuts down on blisters on heavy walking days), collaspible water bottle & iodine tablets, a plain black knit skirt.

Thanks for the great weblink to the packing site!

Good health and high spirits!

you should go back into the forum under "Packing -- what's great to take?"

When you posted it back then, you got quite a few responses, that would save us from repeating ourselves..

I always have to take and buy music, not only does having a musical theme to your trip help you melt into the culture around you the C. Ds are an awesome way to remember the smallest details of a trip when played to friends at a later date.

My rules are:

Always the minimum baggage.

Never more than three baggage items to mind

On aircraft-cabin baggage only unless there are some major business items to be carried, - clothes can always be washed requiring few changes to be carried.

Good mobile communication arrangements -e.g. data card for lap-top so that i can find vital telephone numbers when i become lost.

It is nice to buy simple necessities even in very sophisticated places e.g. London or Berlin. It makes me feel more part of the location and minimises the weigh i must carry.

A goodlight-weight camera is a luxury but not a necessity- i can keep the happy colourful memories in my head.

I wish you enormous success with your work-shops
