Is that a tradition, why so many people are cremated together?

Actually cremation day is a day of joy in Bali as the soul of the deceased is set free on the occasion and need no longer linger on earth.
In Bali a single cremation is a very costly event; so poor people often decide to save money by cremating a number of their deceased relatives together, thus reducin. Bodies are temporarily buried for up to 5 yrs. and then cremated in a joint event, although the number in the above cremation was unusually high.

- correction: "... thus reducing the cost for the indivual family."

Very interesting! And this setting free of the soul is only possible be cremating?

Yes - otherwise the spirit of the deceased cannot be reincarnated and will angrily haunt the family - or so it is believed.

Danke für die Information! :)

What fascinating info. So I guess the loved ones that have to be buried for up to 5 years are haunting the families until they are released? ;-) But the pyres are beautifully decorated.

... and VERY costly (cf. my added photos). That is why a cremation can be ruinous for a family (the royal cremation in Ubud in 2010 is said to have cost around 5 mio. $ !!!). As ceremonies (Balinese: 'upacara') are frequent and always rather costly, they are an increasing load on the many poor families that are not profiting from tourism, i.e. families in rural, remote areas.

I never thought about cremation ceremonies like that, only about weddings... sehr aufschlussreich!
