Great idea - why did nobody think of it before? I think increasingly that the most important area in which we are not successful is getting new members to become active. Sometimes a welcome helps but I admit that most of my welcome messages are unanswered. [Perhaps some think I am soliciting???]
However this won't help in that way unless new members know that the feature exists. I think this increases the case for an automatic welcome to go to new members with a list of the features they can use - and a suffestion that they should print it.
Good wishes

Hello David,
thank you for your posting. I have moved it to "GLOBO intern talk" as I would like to keep the posting of development log threads exclusivly to me or following GLOBO developers. I hope you do not mind.
I agree very much with what you have said. The main problem is to "recruit" new members. This is partly due to high entry barriers. Once members start posting they come back pretty often as it "sucks you in", other members start commenting etc.
As I mentioned before GLOBO time is a start in a new strategy to get new members into the live cycle of GLOBO memberships. I am thinking about GLOBO mentors. Senior members who pass certain criterias could become mentors of new members. If the new members reach a certain step, for example GLOBO time exceeds 2 hours, over 1000 GLOBO points, 5 reports with > 4 average rating. Or similar the GLOBO newcomer becomes something like a GLOBO senior as well. To stimulate that I am thinking about different ways to get the people involved. Current favourite is 50$US Amazon gift certificate split between the two. The activities folders would also show the GLOBO newbies that a GLOBO mentor is supporting including achievements of his newbies. Most important is, that GLOBO supports that process fully automated.
Just some basic ideas which I am working on. Feedback is appreciated.
Best regards,
Andy

Sorry Andy - it was meant to be a reply in the development blog but I pigged up. I like your idea of mentors.

At www.listsofbests.com/ we have tutors and seniors too called "local ambassadors", chosen automatically by upload content (or online-time?) One may refuse this title then the next best member is given it. See example (note the reference to GLOBO too)at:
www.43places.com/person/rangutan
Local Ambassador to Munich)
We could start off with local ambassadors for each country, then expand to states or even cities eventually if it works well? These ambassadors would give personal welcome in addition to an automatic digital welcome (email). I think everyone should additionally attempt to greet newbies occasionally or even randomly too, specially if they speak the same mother tongue or have a common interest.
We could award the title "Tutor" to that member who has the most experience at GLOBO for each different language, they would too add a welcome in the home language and assist the newbie with any questions. These language "tutors" would also keep an eye on what is written in foreign languages and report or assist staff where necessary.
We must encourage newbies to upload a personal photo, it helps a lot to associate with the member together with the list of interests. I seem to ignore newbies that do not bother to upload anything!

David,
when I got a welcome message I found it a pleasant thing but it did not automatically rose the need to answer.
To mark the "welcomer" as mentor or ambassador or fellow would give him a kind of official touch which might be useful to distinguish from the ones who simply reply to pretty user pictures.
BTW., what about simply deleting the "one day visit wonders" who have been inactive for years to clean-up the site? There are some entries which might have been added only to distribute the member picture anonymously. (Maybe this belongs to another thread?)
Globotime is a nice statistical measure for the site admin but I cannot use it for myself. Maybe the average over all foto ratings of uploaded pictures would be of more interest (especially to the non-top20)? Or a button which starts a slideshow with the selection made under "pictures"?
ciao, Joe

I agree with Joe except that we should NOT delete accounts! Member count is the most important statistic to web-communities. Some of those one-day wonder members can an have come back, are also sent emails occasionally that get some of them to eventually contribute. Disc space is not a financial problem anymore, no need to clean up. Like with pictures, the rating system arranges the best material first and the trash at the end. For members, the point system does similar, members joining for just a day will not usually be found in the list of top 2000!

i agree with Rudi but I do find it disappointing that it takes as few as 400 points to reach the top 200. This is NOT meant as a reflexion on those who have reached page 10 but on all of us for our failure to get more people far more actively involved.
Cheers
