Just let you know, dear Globies...
After long fighting for the KSA visa I found out that there are GS members residing in Jeddah. I was going to unknown country, to unknown town - I decided to write to six most active GS members from Jeddah asking "I will be there. Is this possible to meet you, talk and walk around?" Till today I got only one, but immediate response from Mr ahsaaas: "ok my friend ... witing U"
Then I asked him by e-mail if we can make maybe an excursion paid by me and how we can contact in Jeddah - maybe by phone... No answer till today... Fugas chrustas!...
Did I expect too much? Or maybe there are "dead souls" in our membership list? Or maybe they are just shy?...

That's sad what you're writing about. I think there are many 'dead souls' on Globo - it's enough to have a look at the member list to notice that many members just registered here and never came back.

You should know that the Saudis are a very closed community! It is their right and will and they wish to avoid mass western tourism into their holy country, specially backpackers. If you had followed my advice and joined an organised group or got an appointed "letter of invitation", there would be not much problem with a visa. Important was also is to apply well in advance like I mentioned before, not believing that, that is why I myself got to miss my best opportunity in going there.
You would get lucky if a GLOBOmember was someone of the royal family. The normal folk their are NOT very mobile and most do not really want contact with foreigners. It is in their nature.
Similarly; Bhutan, North Korea, Antarctica .... Is it easier to get a visa to stay overnight in the Holy See (Vatican)? Some of us are very privileged. Most (75%) of the world population will have problems and delays in getting a simple tourist visa for the EU or USA also!!!
Doing a search for KSA I see there are some names that are not very Arabic but a lot that have genuine profile pictures. I wish the resulting search list would be sorted by member activity or contributed points! We have no current active GLOBOambassador for KSA now but that will change with time and as we "close the gaps" at GLOBO :-)

What does "Fugas chrustas!" really mean? I would not use those words near any consulate. That might be why you didn't get your visa?

Given how few people reply to welcomes, I'm not surprised at the news. However there are some organisations that have a simple letter code, showing whether a member wants to be left alone, to participate on the web but no more, to show other members around or to provide accomodation.
I wonder whether members would like such information here - no particularly strong feelings either way myself, but we have to accept members' rights just to join for information if they want to - even though they can get it without. --- Grieve not for that which you cannot do but rejoice in that which you can.

David, we have this choice. In our profile we can set our preferences and disable 'guestbook'and 'contact' --- “I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” Robert Louis Stevenson

Hello Wojtek,
I believe this is quite normal. Only about 1% of members are really active in virtual communities. This counts almost for any community topic. Wikipedia for example is a huge success, but most of the people just read and enjoy free knowledge while way under 1% participate. Guess that's live :-)
Anyway I hope you do find the info you need.
Best regards,
andy
