andreas Joined: May 02 Points: 8313 Posts: 809 Posted: 2004-12-01 17:26:00    Hi everybody, thank you everybody for another great month on GLOBOsapiens.net I really like the way you guys create a harmony inside the community which is clearly outstanding. All the great insider info, the beautiful pix and the amazing reports. Not to forget you guys who keep me on track with all the bug reports :-) Now the month is over and it comes to selecting the contest winners. Anouncing content contest winners is not that hard. You guys already do half the work with guest book comments, ratings etc. But selecting the member of the month is a hard choice! To be completly honest, I do not feel that I am very much neutral anymore, since lots of you top members have build a personal relationship with myself. Plus the most active members keep anyhow more or less the same. So I am clueless for this month. There are at least 3 candidates who would be fitting into this position. I would like to pause the member of the month award for the month of November and Dezember. In January we will have some new people working at GLOBO who will do the judgement istead of myself, plus in 05 we might introduce some prizes for the upcomming award winners which neads to be prepared. I hope none of you is disapointed with this. You are free to comment on this and report whatever your opinion is. Britman-for his outstanding and immaculate Shri Lanka images ,reports and Also for his participation in basically every issue Globo community rises. 2. Rangutan-for his wonderful ideas and participation.His slide shows such as “Snow and Ice”,”Rivers,Waterfalls and Lakes”,”Transport around the Glob”, “Festivals and Parades” and of course many others are eye catching and he introduced the totally different and I would say revolutionary ideas on how put all the images into very interesting thematical concept. 3. Mortimer-for his technical support,not only for new but also long time members And also for his excellent advises and great effort for all members and entire Globo community. My Best Wishes to every one here,and lets all be close to each other,support everyone here!!!!! And make our community the Best on the Net!!!!!!!!!!!! I just feel that some people around here are really looking for attention and are hungry for the award, to discontinue it for two months and restarting afterwards makes an weird impression. I do understand that electing Brit for a third time or me a second time in a row doesn't help the system very much. I am sure however that neither Britman nor I do resent when we aren't elegible for MOM any more. This community is not only about striving to get the awards. The community feeling we have among us is the thing thats important. I feel all of you are like friends to me. So I would always enjoy seing a friend being top of the list. How about a MOM is not eligible for the next 12 months? This might help with the decision. How about electing a rookie of the month? Electing a MOM for being a great buddy and a helpful member for the community could be another way of deciding who will get the award. Boris, Hugh and Ravi are not posting that much reports or images but are great buddys to everybody and important to keep the thing going. They all deserve a great buddy award at least! Her Reports are just amazing and there is lots of other things she has done for the community! I really think she does deserve the award in November. Mortimer is right, we need rules which define the outlines. I will be thinking about it. The staff should choose, JUDGES DESCISSION IS FINAL, that is still in the rules of membership, I hope. Within all clubs, societies, communities and also business, most will confirm that not all members will ever be satisfied; there are doers and takers, loudmouths and silent-partners, jokers and duds. Its very hard to contribute but the reward and experience remains within for all, forever. The Member-of-the-Month could also be automatically be awarded without much personal feelings and without a complicated voting system. There are 5 ways, perhaps the last is best. A) GUT FEELING - by general feeling (Factor 0,01 - 0,99) of one or more judges B) QUALITY - by counting the members average rated quality (stars) for new pictures and reports (x5) for the month. Only a computer could easily count these, eg. 0 to 500 new stars every month. ...all (also new) members should be considered! C) ENTHUSIASM - by the total points accumulated in the month for members input. example 0 to 5000 points eg. November2004 I think: 1368 britman 1270 mortimer 893 spaceout 652 mistybleu 633 picasso 616 gloriajames 565 fieryfox 553 ravinderkumarsi 531 bootlegga 511 magsalex 443 bineba ... many more D) POPULARITY - by the members counted web-clicks: (eg. TOP 10 this fortnight something like) 10396 spaceout 7392 daniserralta 7779 britman 6362 downundergal 4910 wojtekd 4893 undedd 3409 el2995 5268 whereisliz 7408 fieryfox 2720 gardkarlsen 3267 mortimer .... many more 5) a COMBINATION of all the above by a calculable formula, for example: M.o.M Rating = A* ( 8*B + 3*C + D) This, or any combination, is a good method (and now understand "matrix") because no treats or tricks, just best member participation required. PS: I would though also like to see an eventual "Pioneer-of-the-Month" (also backdated) for those contributers in the past who always still attract web-surfers, members and potential advertisers to GLOBO. Some of them accumulate web-hits/clicks at a rate more than us active members!!!! Great decision Andy on both counts! I think the greatest motivator to all members, be they senior, existing or new members is the competition to win an award(s). It doesn’t matter a jot if you get a T shirt, Amazon voucher or a free month on Globo – what matters is the esteem of an award. Indeed the only accolade is the award itself, or perhaps a nomination for an award or even a mention in despatches! Andy, I am sure that you do get weary and could do with a break from judging everything yourself. Similarly, I’m confident that your workload will ease when the new office and staff come on line. (Then, it’s sods law that the other management problems are sure to kick in!!) I similarly understand your feelings of potential conflict between friendship and impartiality – but you have excellent judgment and we all trust you too! If however you feel as you do - why not consider joining in the members and ask, say the top ten/twenty members or those over say 500 points to nominate other members for the awards - you could then judge from just their nominations? This would save you looking at everything! What do you think? What do other members think of this idea? Secondly, if that proved successful then you could have more awards in each of the existing categories –for Senior, Intermediate, Newcomer members. Also an award for Tip of the Month could encourage more tips to be forthcoming? Again I am trying, like all the contributors here, to motivate everyone and encourage our growth organically because I rate Globo and am proud of my membership! Congrats to Gloriaj! She really does deserve this award. How about an award also for the newest members enrolling in a month. They would feel welcome to the Globo family and at the same time even if they are the 1000th member in the listing they will know that we did acknowledge their presence.
