A houseboat in the backwaters of Kerala |

Alleppey, now known as Alappuzha, is a major centre for backwater cruises. A large network of canals passes through the town. They are covered by the blue flowers of the water hyacinth, not as pretty as they seem because they clog the waterways.
Alleppey's main industries are coir making and cashew nut processing. Some old warehouses line the waterfront and are of architicural interest.
Alleppey is a starting point of backwater trips to Kollam, Kottayam and Kochi. It is not difficult to find a boat because many people own boats and offer trips from two hours to three or more days.
The KSRTC bus station is at Vadai Canal Bank South near Jetty Foot Bridge. There are frequent buses to Kochi (1h. 30 mins), Kollam (2 hrs 30 mins), Kottayam (1h. 30 mins)and Thiruvananthapuram (3 hrs 30 mins).
Also have a look at Alappuzha (the other name for Alleppey). Here you will find links to reports and more tips. [edit text]
