Not that the Spaniards were suspicious to leave everything in countries they usurped... ;-)
Btw, the term 'guerilla war' comes from the Spanish liberation figth against the French troops under Napoleon.

Petra: I would agree to return all the items that Spain brought from South America in the colonial times if all the countries would follow the example, especially Germany, country number one in Europe that raided most treasures from Central Asia, China, present Iraq, Egypt, etc., today kept in Berlin Staatliche Museum and other museums around the country. But if Germany does that, its museums would be practically empty.

Petra: and I forgot to add the Amber room looted to the Russians in Sankt Petersburg.
- Feb, 22 2009 03:02pm
Jorge, you are right, many countries have skeletons in the closet. At least Germany doesn't have that big colonial part in its more than problematic history...

The amber room originally was made for a palace in Berlin, tzar Peter I the Great admired it when he visited Prussia. He got the room as a present of king Friedrich Wilhelm I in 1716 and brought it to St. Petersburg. The room is missing since the end of WW II.

Petra: I know the history of the Amber room. I was there a few years ago. Look at my new profile picture in that reconstructed room.
I will delete that picture as soon as you confirm me yjay you have seen it. I do not like it, is 5 years old or so. I only show it to you for didactic purposes

Jorge, thanks for your didactic efforts :). You can change your profile pic again.

I would like to play devil's advocate in this debate and point out that all nationalities have played their part in conquest over the centuries right back to neantherdal man who, it is so believed was usurped by homo sapiens! English is based on two languages, latin (old french, spanish etc) and early germanic so I think I am the right person to call this a draw, wanna fight hehe.

Explain didactic to an ignorant Englishman please?.
- Feb, 22 2009 05:02pm
Greek: didáskein, to teach - thank you, Tony, for 'joining the debate'. :)

I have just consulted the Oxford English Dictionary and it read as follows; in the manner of a teacher, patronising or hectoring. From C17 Gk. didaktikos. I think Fred should join this debate on behalf of the French, after all Bonnie Prince Charlie was a Frenchman.

Thanks Tony, for joining.
I do not like just to post pictures without any comment, as many members do. So, I added a comment and my opinion about the future museum in that house where Napoleon spent one night. I know that the French will never return the so many treasures that they took from Spain during the Napoleon invasion.
So I agree with the draw that you propose.
Only want to add that the Italians returned to Ethiopia the famous obelisk taken from Axum during Mussolini times.
So, there is hope that one day the European Governments will return all the treasures that they robbed during war times to their original owners.

Thank you for your comment, I am only playing devil's advocate, your opinion is your right. Debate is always a good thing, we will let you have back the Costa del Sol, hehe. ps I always look forward to info on pics.
- Feb, 22 2009 06:02pm
Thanks Toni.
I fear that the Fred you are talking about (a member without profile picture, I guess) already took part in the discussion, because he gave me just 1 point to this picture.
Usually we rate a picture with only 1 point if it is spam, which is not the case of my present picture. Not nice, of course, he also rated several more of my pictures with 1 point, or the minimum points he could allowed by the system.
- Feb, 22 2009 06:02pm
Do not take offense, he probably mistook your comments as an attack on the French and retaliated, he is a nice guy and I shall remonstrate with him, I shall quite likely start another English/Scot war.hehe.
