A hidden Treasure Island for the brave |
Mozambique Island is a wonder and the only UNESCO monument in the country. The island was the Portuguese capital during their Empire in Asia. There lived Portuguese heroes, such as Luis de Camoes (who has a monument in front of the sea), or the Spanish Jesuit Francisco Javier.
I saw a XVI century castle (destroyed two centuries later by the Dutch), a palace with a museum inside showing old chariots like the Museo das Carrozas in Lisbon, colonial Portuguese houses, several churches constructed in Manuelino style, and a cathedral where prayed the very few Catholics of the island; practically all the population is Muslim, except a Hindu selling cashew nuts who has a small temple devoted to Shiva. The streets are narrow with houses made with coral and bamboo and the bazaar is very exotic. The young girls paint their face with white powder, called nsiro, to avoid getting darker.
Presently Mozambique is not really an island anymore, being united to the continent by a long bridge.
