Lapu Lapu monument |

I discovered that monument quite by chance. I had just visited the holy Santo Niño in Cebu and proceeded to Mactan Island to buy a famous bandurria in one of the factories, when suddenly I saw an impressive and massive statue dedicated to the first Philippines hero, Lapu Lapu, a local chief that killed Fernando de Magallanes (Magellan) during his epic around the world journey.
Besides the imposing statue of Lapu Lapu I noticed a modest small plaque on the floor in honour of Magellan.
After Magellan death, the Spanish Juan Sebastian Elcano captained the voyage and, after many tribulations, managed to arrive to Spain, completing, thus, the first around the world journey.
The expedition left Sevilla on 10th august 1519 and returned to Spain on 6th September 1522. Out of the five ships only one completed the journey (called Victoria), and out of 319 people only Elcano and 18 sailors returned alive.
