Le Canal du Midi |

Everybody knows that France is a country of culture and beauty with many wonders, from the magnificence of Paris to the Loire unbelievable castles, from the paintings of the Louvre museum to the unique Mont Saint Michel. But I want to point out another marvel which very few foreigners visit: the Canal du Midi, a masterpiece of engineering, which is a UNESCO Patrimony of Mankind, and connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea. It was constructed by Pierre Paul Riquet, who in his time (the seventeen Century) was considered the Moses of the Languedoc.
I had the opportunity to navigate in a boat from Beziers to lovely walled city of Carcassonne, which I consider one of main great travel achievements in France. In some parts we were helped by horses, and in others we had to gain metres until the sea level through several floodgates.
