Bethanie is one of the oldest settlements in Namibia and lies west of Keetmanshoop which was founded by the London Missionary - Reverend Heinrich Schmelen.

The oldest European building in Namibia is sited here, Schmelenhause that dates back to 1814. It is now considered to be a national monument and museum. The other building of interest is the church (1859) in its original state.

The most significant event that occurred here was the first signing of a deed of sales for land on the coast that subsequently became the town of Luderitz. [edit text]  [editors]
