Hi there
Just recently I stumbled across this book:
1000 Places to see before you die by patricia schultz
http://tinyurl.com/ps8ol (amazon link)
An other possible shortlist for travel entusiasts could be the UNESCO Heritage sites. There are 812 World Heritage sites at the moment in the UNESCO list. If you are interested to find out here's the link: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/
Have you already been to the ones near you and made a travel guide or even a report?
Might be inspirational
Have a great day

Hi There
I just had a look at some of the places on the UNESCO list.
Scroll down to the very end of the page and look under Links.
all the WHTour links will bring you to this great page:
http://www.world-heritage-tour.org/map.html
There you will find amazing 360° Pictures! Absolutely breathtaking!
Some places also feautre a movie. Look under Media.
A most amazing website! A must for every traveller?!
Have a great day

Hi Martin
I agree that the list provides a lot of great ideas but sometimes I really wonder about the choice.
Looking at the list for England makes me more determined than ever to write a report soon about a place that's not in it and, to my mind, definitely should be - York. Until the industrial revolution it was England's second city and has so many remains of Roman, Viking and medieval times. I'm only waiting on a good time to get some photos but it will not be until June at the earliest.
You might find it interesting that I've seen a higher proportion of the sites listed for France and Italy than those for the UK!
Cheers

Martin,
Looks like a great book and a terrific resource Alas, my list of places I want to go gets longer and longer while time gets shorter and shorter.... --- Life is not measured by the breaths you take but by the moments that take your breath away. Profile Pic: Tikal, Guatemala

M‘Martin thanks so much!
Since you mentioned "1000 Places to see before you die" I searched for the complete list and now discovered the interactive http://www.listsofbests.com that not only lists that 1000 but many others too, including the UNESCO sites.
Further, one can register (free registration is almost confusingly done via www.43people.com) and create an on going updateable personal databank. For an example see my profile at www.listsofbests.com/person/rangutan and thus my travel and other interests and experiences:
a) Patricia Schultz’s 1000 places is great!Note though that 500 of the target places are in Europe and 200 in the USA. For David there are even also two sites in York. The rest of the world is covered very thinly!
b)UNESCO list: the list seems not to be complete/up-to-date here yet? Help?
c) Steve Davey's 40 very HOT tips for travellers before they go, good planning hints!
d) National Geographic Travellers Grand Tour, also very good planning hints!
e) The Travelers' Century Club's "Directory of Countries" is ideal for Jorge, Wojciech & the serious islanders to keep track of progress and search for the holes?
f) And for VERY experienced international eaters there are list for cuisine, wine and beer! RR [ This Message was edited by: rangutan on 2006-08-03 06:03 ] --- Rudolf "Rangutan" Graspointner

My best travel planning list is at
http://www.listsofbests.com/list/4?page=1 where I got quite involved in expanding the UNESCO World Heritage List the last few months. We are still looking for a lot of pictures from these heritage sites, if you have any, this is an opportunity for GLOBOmembers to get famous there. These lists are great because you can mark progress and planning seperately.
When (if) registering, please give your GLOBO member page as an URL to help GLOBOsapiens to expand too, see example at http://rangutan.43people.com/
