Pakistan 2008, Skardu, Indus Valley |
|
 |
Skardu is actually just a small village, nothing special, in the middle of nowhere BUT the surrounding nature is breathtaking.
Treks to some of the most spectacular mountains of this world start from here: K2, Masherbrum and Trango Tower starting from here.
You can fly in from Islamabad on irregular basis, due the weather conditions, or by road from Gilgit which takes about 6-7 hours on a rough road. Between July and September you can hire a jeep to visit Deosai Plains in a 2 days roundtrip or hike in a week time, to a scenic grassy plateau on 4000m. It is one of the six national parks of Pakistan, home of snow leopards, indian wolfs and Himalaya brown bears.
Skardu is not far from the line-of-control, border to India Ladakh mountain region.
The Naya Bazaar offers everything, you possible need, but the older Purana Bazaar is where the locals work and do their business. Most of the people are Balti Tibetans, but there are Punjabis, Pashtuns, Hunzakuts , and Uyghurs. [edit text]
