Travel guide to Amantani
Amantani gate.
Amantani gate.
Amantani is a beautiful Peruvian island in Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake on the Peru/Bolivia border. Homesteads are to be found over a very wide area and the volcanic soil is good.
Most homesteads take visitors in conection with tours of Peru and it is a delightful experience staying with the Quechua families, many of whom have some Spanish and even a smattering of English.
On Sunday nights there is a fiesta where visitors are dressed appropriately for a dance in the village hall.
Many visitors make for the mountain top to see the sunset.
The Quechua inhabitants eat very simply, tastily and nutritiously. Peru is the home of the potato and there are said to be over 600 varieties. You can get a few of them here - and a great quinua soup. [edit text]  [editors]
