Travel guide to Krakov

Center

Krakov was the ancient capital of Poland until 1596. Wawel, the hill top castle-and-cathdral complex used to be the political centre for centuries. Todays it is the number one tourist sight.

With a population of just under a million, Krakov is a large city. Fortunately the histiric centre is compact and can easily be seen on foot.

The city came through WW II undamaged and Stare Miasto, the old centre, is an architectural gem of magnificent houses and towering spires. Until WW II Krakov was one of the great Jewish centres in Europe, a past that still lingers in kazimierz, the old Ghetto area with its synagogues and Jewish cemetry.

It is also the city of Pope John Paul II who was archbishop here until his election in 1978.
