This was founded by King David as a monastery then an abbey around 900 years ago, the abbey ruins are to the right here. Elizabeth I was the Queen of England during her reign and Mary Queen of Scots lived here 1561-1567 and this was also the Edinburgh base of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745.
