Travel guide to Evora
Cathedral
Cathedral
Evora is often regarded as the second most interesting city in Portugal, behind Lisbon. Be that as it may, it's certainly a beautiful city.
The Roman temple, attributed somewhat dubiously to the goddess Diana, is one of the best known sights of the city. Unfortunately it's only that because it's not permitted to go up into the temple area. However the spectacle of the top of the city, with the temple, the Pousada, the incredibly tiled church of the Convento dos Lóios and the palace of the Dukes of Cadaval is immensely pleasing.
Lower down is the stately Praça de Giralda, apparently a major meeting place for the city's residents.
Further down is a public park with beautiful trees, numerous peacocks and the impressive palace of D. Manuel, where Vasco da Gama was given his command for his discoveries in India.
There are substantial remains of the old 'Silver Water' aqueduct, where houses are built into the arches.
No rail here and the bus station is south just outside the walls. [edit text]  [editors]
