I myself use a handheld Garmin GPS all the time on my travels. It's very handy (if you have the right coordinates) to find the site or place you are interested in. I have quite a few waypoints myself of different campsites I stayed at in Afrika and I suggested that there should be some kind of database where members can look for GPS waypoints they might want to use. What is the opinion of other Globosapiens.net pioneers?

Good suggestion! Right what I missed too, but would not the cool part be linking it with the locations database and a sat image system? (serious)

Ok... that sounds verry specific. Not sure if other users demand this to?!
However it would be possible to join geocoordinates with the locations. I just do not see the advantage right now.
Maybe you could make a clear example how this would benefit to the globosapiens.net members. Where would this geodate be displayed?

The cool part would be to be able to select on coords too.
Do you remember the discussion we had on off shore locations for diving? well, this is where it's handy to have. In time it would probably be possible to cross reference the coords to, say for instance, wrecks on the bottem of the ocean... and then the diving community might get real interested!
Cheers,

so if I did understand you right.. you would like to enter your own coordinates and not to get the from the db while you upload the image? Because there might not be a city available on the sea :-) Lets say we would do that, how would you expect to get data out again? By adding a submenue under gallery which has a search engine for geocoords? Hmm... possible.
What do the other say would something like this benefit you guys? I mean this is a serious amount of programming work and should benefit more that 2 persons. If there is really a demand for this post it here and add you what you think about it.

PS: Please do use the reply button (located on the menu box) if you reply to a on going discussion. The quote function is ment if you are quoting somebodies post 2, or 3 replies back. Thanx

The quote function is also handy for seeing the message you replying to while you are typing. (hint for extra functionality)
The cool part for coords might just be that the search would be able to show what is in the neighbourhood of something...
That would make it possible to show where there are relatively many reports, other reports that might be related, photo's that have been taken somewhat nearby...
and ... the sky is (not really) the limit.
cheers

I think Andreas was asking how people benefit from these GPS waypoints? Well I can only explain how I use them and maybe proof the significance of it:
When I drive with a car I use waypoints to know how long it will take me to get there. Also it can guide me towards a certain point (campsite, ATM machine, Views, Embassies etc.) that is difficult to find in a foreign city. In Botswana the Shell company offers a map of all the touristics sites and important off road crossings with it's coordinates. The only thing I need to do is put the coordinates in and I will find the place where I am looking for. I once drove through the Kalahari without any problems because of these GPS waypoints...

In another few years we'll GPS in our watches. I agree it'd handy for finding dive sites, ruins loads of things.
At the moment at's mostly yachties but before you know it there'll be one in every rental car.
Even if there was an option to add the waypoint to an article / pics. I wouldn't worry about a search facility yet, but the GPS location itself would be good.
Also, took a bit of searching to find the reply button for the thread. Have you thought about adding it at the bottom of the page to make it a bit more obvious for us first-timers?

I am big into photography. I also am getting into gps for out of the way locations. Too often tried following directions to a specific site and not really pinning it down. I would like to see it happen if it is feasable.
