Our pictures in the photo gallery have the globo logo. This makes copying them less interesting (although Photoshop can work wonders) The 1024 format and photos in reports and in tips have no logo.
This means that all our photos can easily be copied. This happened to one of my photos. This is my photo on a commercial website
http://www.traveltogoa.com/index.php?a=2&b=194
It is the photo of Alphonso Guesthouse in Panjim, in the 'featured Goa Listing'
and this is my photo on Globo

My question is this;
Would it be possible to make photo theft more difficult for the general internet user. (professionals will always be able to use work of others)

Marianne,
This is awful, have you contacted the company?
You have raised a good question, how do we protect our pictures and more to the point can we?

amanda, I have not written to them yet as I am still thinking what words to use. --- “I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” Robert Louis Stevenson

Sadly this cannot be prevented, the internet is a pretty free-for-all medium. Imagine how many millions are also lost by artists and musicians every day :- (
You could simply ask traveltogoa.com to add a link under the picture to www.globosapiens.net/marianne as sort of credit or if they prefere, choose between a royalty of say $150 one-time, or $25 per month! If they simply remove it, send a bill with a "screenshot" as evidence?
I would be against large watermarks on all the photos, even the white GLOBO label is sometimes disturbing, specially in slide-shows.
90% Solution: some photographers websites have a "Sperre", which deactivates the mouse button when marking a picture, one cannot choose the option to copy! ("Adobe Flash" tool?) There is a trick around this though, using the keyboard button "print" (print-screen) one can still copy the entire view on the screen including the picture into a graphic programme like MS-Paint or PhotoShop and trim the view, even the white GLOBO label :- (
Example: try copy this picture. Click on "English and read the note" :-)

I think that such a tool is expensive and we should rather accept that a very very small percentage of businesses try this "theft"? [ This Message was edited by: rangutan on 2007-12-10 04:07 ] --- Rudolf "Rangutan" Graspointner

Rudi,
I raised this question to show how vulnerable we are. I have given away several photos to websites after they approached me and asked if they could use my photo, some even paid. But in this case it is different, they just took it. And also the fact that they are a commercial website.
Protecting our photos is impossible, but at the moment they are very easy to copy. I don't find the Globo logo disturbing. If added to 1024 size photos it would make copying less interesting.

Marianne,
what about a try to ask that company very friendly to exchange it or to add a copyright notice which tells where it comes from? Maybe you could offer this instead of asking for money?
At least their answer would increase our experience of what others do when asked.

Joe, Thanks for your advice. I will be in Panajim in two weeks'tome and intend to stay inthe same hotel as the one who used my photo. I will tell them and hopefully they will give me a free night in return (I may even suggest this to them) --- “I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake.
