HEY JOHN, THANKS FOR THE REPLY, AND I WOULD DEFINATELY LOVE SOME ADVICE. FIRST OFF, I'M FLYING DOWN TO SAN JOSE IN MID MARCH, AND AM HOPING TO STAY AT A HOSTEL THERE FOR A NIGHT OR TWO BEFORE HEADING DOWN TO MONTEZUMA BEACH. ARE THERE ANY PLACES IN SAN JOSE YOU RECOMMEND CHECKING OUT? WHAT'S THE BEST AND MOST AFFORDABLE WAY TO TRAVEL FROM SAN JOSE TO MONTEZUMA? ONCE IN MONTEZUMA, HOW DO I FIND A CHEAP PLACE TO STAY? THE WEB SEEMS TO POST ONLY TWO HOTELS OF THE SAME PRICE, AND I'M LOOKING FOR SOMETHING IN THE HOSTEL RANGE. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PLACES/THINGS YOU REALLY ENJOYED SEEING/DOING WHILE YOU WERE IN MONTEZUMA? AFTER THAT I'M PLANNING ON TRAVELING SOUTH DOWN THE COAST, BUT AM TOTALLY OPEN TO EXPLORING ANY PART OF THE COUNTRY WHILE I'M DOWN THERE. WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME TRAVELING ALONE, AND WOULD LOVE TO GET ANY AND ALL FRIENDLY PERSPECTIVES ON HOW BEST TO NAVIGATE MY WAY ONCE I'M THERE. THANKS A LOT JOHN, AND YOU'RE PICTURES OF THE BEACHES ARE BEAUTIFUL.

Brad, I cannot offer any advice for San Jose. I've been to CR four times, but never spent the night in San Jose. It is not very pretty and I thought dangerous. To get to Montezuma from San Jose, you need to catch the bus to Punta Arenas from inside San Jose (1-2000 Colones 2hrs.). In Punta Arenas take the Parquero Ferry (1000 C 1.5 Hrs.) then there will be a bus to Montezuma (1000 C 1.5Hrs.) The bus drops you off dead center Montezuma, I stayed at Hotel Los Mangos for $30/night during the super high season, the accomodation was great and close, Hotel Lucy was across the street and I heard it was considerably cheaper and very nice. Staying near the bus stop I have heard is unbearably noisy (if you plan on sleeping between 4-7AM). There is plenty to keep ou busy in Montezuma, but it is hard to find public transport to get you to your next destination. There is boat service ($55) to Jaco and Samara, but no bus service to other locals from Parquero (back on the Ferry). I would go north on the peninsula to Tamarindo, or into the countryside to La Fortuna, Monteverde, or Somewhere. Quepos and Manuel Antonio have excellent beaches, but are bit more expensive. Puerto Viejo on the Carribean is worth the trip (weather permitting). --- -j
