Hi Mortimer
Funnily enough, yesterday I at last got to looking at a whole lot of faqs and other forum items I’d not previously read and I meant to write to you today to express my admiration for so much good guidance.
However I think this is one of the most helpful of all and we should all be grateful to you for being willing to set yourself up in this way.
I personally should very much like to know how you would rate them yourself, when there’s been time for others to do so.
I tried to show my own willingness to do the same for some of my pictures but I kept hitting the word limit. I’ll perhaps write a separate letter on it..
Thanks again, David

Follow up to yesterday:
I'm certainly not a 'natural' photographer - about as much artistic ability as a camel - so I should only give myself a very few more 5* than the two I've got. I think I could go along with the other 4s.
It's with the 3s that it gets controversial. Whereas I agree with a lot of those gradings I should move some both up and down. Sometimes it's worth putting up a poorer photo for a time to illustrate a particulr point about others but it becomes pointless once it is separated from them in the file. Oddly, when I tried to delete one of these yesterday, I found that someone else had used it as a postcard.
I don't think we should make people grade their own on the site but I'm sure it's a good idea to have a grade in your mind when you upload a photo. Then you probably won't upload 2 or 1 star photos without a reason.
If you think one rated as 2* by members is worth more or you are fond of it, leave it there. It may be uprated ages later as with two of mine! --- Grieve not for that which you cannot do but rejoice in that which you can.

Hi David
Thank you very much for your kind words... it's really giving me motivation to do more such stuff ;-)
Personal rating... well, in my eyes most of them are quite good, there are just small differences between them... my favourite is the one with the heavy rings in the front... If you want my personal hit list at the moment... 6, 3, 1, 5, 4, 2
6 being the top place...
Anyway my opinion doesn't really matter. My point is that people should look at the pics and decide for themselfs and by spotting the differences and by thinking about the pics get inspired to do so when shooting their own pics. Well shooting is not the right word we all should stop shoot and begin create or compose ;-)
Hope it helps...

Hi Mortimer
I agree with you - but I actually gave them both the same rating when I looked at htem before reading this. Sometimes i feel very torn between two grades and the one I like better was a case in point.
Sometimes a rating is a bit of a blunt instrument - which emphasises the importance of having a lot of them.
One poser. If ratings are always put to the one above the average, what's happened with your second one called something like 'old and new' - the ship?
Cheers, David --- Grieve not for that which you cannot do but rejoice in that which you can.
