As William Dalrymple says, "A revelation ... by far the best introduction yet available to the modern history of Burma".

Shway Yoe, The Burman, His Life and Notions,The Norton Library, W.W.Norton& Company Inc., New York1963.
Although first published in 1882 it is still is valid and useful in our times.

George Orwell, Burmese Days, Penguin Books 2009.
This first book of Orwell is based on his experience as a pliceman in Burma and describes British colonial rule.

Inge Sarnet, Twilight over Burma, My Life as a Shan Princess, Silkworm Books 1998
The story of an Austrian woman married to a Shan Prince in 1953.

Tahir Imran Khan, Kaghan Valley, a tourist& trekkers guide, Alhamra Publishing, Islamabad, Pakistan 2003.
This is a valuable book when exploring the beauties of Pakistan.
