Oct 28, 2008 07:00 PM Shut up shop

Shut up shop Well I finished up work today, and really feel a little frightened but yet full of hope. Such new horizoins are coming to light. This time tomorrow I will be in a completely different environmnt. Whooo hooo

Oct 27, 2008 07:00 PM On the road again

On the road again Well I will now head in to some uncharted territories and take on some new challenges. I'm heading off to the caribbean to do some voluntary work.

Oct 19, 2008 02:00 PM At home again – naturally.

At home again – naturally. Another wonderful flight with no turbulence so I slept all night. When we came into land the plane was drifting from side to side – I thought that the pilot must have been drinking. I even felt sick it was so bumpy, but now I see the news reports of how a pilot showed up to work drink. Sometimes this sort of things can be so off putting. But better they find them before the flight…

OK the highlights of my trip were: being given postcards by the children in Hiroshima for answering their questionnaire; stealing candy from a baby - as I tried to take a picture of her eating candy floss; seeing a wedding at the Shrine on the island; making it to the world famous 4-way crossing – an unexpected delight and off course just being in Tokyo.

I hate to say, but now on to my next trip…

Oct 18, 2008 02:00 PM And now the end is near…

And now the end is near… Today is a lazy day, woke up late and then went to this lovely little coffee shop for breakfast really close to the Tokyo Tower. I wish I could have said that I could see the tower from my seat but that didn’t happen I would have had to gone outside, but still I enjoyed it.

I ended up heading to the Sensoji Temple, as this is the largest in Tokyo and also a tourist trap. There were so many people here, in fact since I’ve been in Japan, I haven’t seen as many but they all seem to converge here and that includes Japanese tourist. Just outside the temples they have a lot of restaurants (well stalls) selling tempura etc, the smells were really wonderful. It was also an opportunity to see people in local attire. A little further on from the food stalls are the souvenir stalls which are sold at a reasonable price – they weren’t too keen in bargaining which was my loss.

Oct 17, 2008 02:00 PM Tokyo or Kyoto – which one shall I chose.

Tokyo or Kyoto – which one shall I chose. On the spin of the coin it came up with Tokyo. So ended up on the late night train from Hiroshima. I think I should have just going to Fuji City but now it is an away day. I wanted to head for the lake, but to far the day was so overcast that I thought it might not be worth it, so I just about saw the mountain and I have to be thankful for that.

Oct 16, 2008 02:00 PM World heritage

World heritage Another World Heritage Site – the Itsukushima Shrine and O-toril Gate. This is a wonderful place to spend the day; I took the train from Hiroshima station (26 minutes) and then it is a 10-minute ferry ride across to the island. I had to do all my travel on the JR network and only had to pay the one price. I kind of think that if I had paid for tours it would have worked out far more expensive. So yet again this pass keeps on giving.

This has to be the highlight of the trip so far. There is so much to see in such perfect surroundings. They have deer that just wonders around the town, but they will eat anything, even paper well that’s what I found out.

Now my dilemma to night is do I head back to Tokyo or Kyoto.

Oct 15, 2008 02:00 PM No time to smell the roses...

No time to smell the roses... Caught the train from Kyoto and ended up on the Nozomi (I don’t think they (the guards) were best pleased) into Hiroshima, well to another station that I can’t remember the name. Passed through the city of Kobe and was surprised that the train went underground miles outside of the city and didn’t surface until it was at the station. On approach and departure it was all underground – I had been told that city had been completely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1995 where over 6,000 people killed, but I really didn’t get to see the city only from the station platform.

Hiroshima is a really amazing place. More for the experience then the buildings and surroundings. The Peace Park was really moving and I meet lots of school children enjoy visiting the area and talking to tourist about peace, it was very engaging.

It was really worthwhile the journey from Kyoto and only two hours.

Oct 14, 2008 02:00 PM Shinkansen Express

Shinkansen Express Just over 2 hours outside of Tokyo is Kyoto the former capital and getting there couldn’t be simpler then by using the Shinkansen. Navigating Tokyo station was a doddle; as the great thing I found was that all signs in the tourist areas were in Japanese and English and also pictures so it was so hard to go wrong. A friend advised that I should always reserve my seat and this proved good advice. It really made the travelling between towns an enjoyable experience.

Oct 13, 2008 02:00 PM Day One - Arrival into Tokyo

Day One - Arrival into Tokyo Day one and I’ve made it – I’m in Tokyo, so far so good. Arrived in really early and got my JR pass exchanged, already I’m seeing the benefit of having one. Travelled around Tokyo and didn’t have to pay any additional Yens - so I am happy. This means that I can travel around from Tokyo to Kyoto, Fuji City and Hiroshima; and I have even found out that the ferry trip to Miyajima Island is also included - what a result.

My first experience of a capsule hotel lived up to my imagination. It is really just like sleeping in a dormitory, except you have a little private space. I must admit I was very surprised how clean it was and how helpful the staff were with a good level of English - well enough to get by.

Tomorrow I head off to Kyoto and this is the part of the journey I’m really looking forward to.

Oct 12, 2008 02:00 PM Up, up and away...

Up, up and away... This day is devoted over to flying. I chose to fly with Air France and therefore have to spend some time in CGD airport. I was surprised at the distance I had to walk in order to transfer between Terminals, I just didn’t think the airport was so large; (or am I getting lazy or what?).

I had the smoothest trip every, with little turbulences; I cannot believe skies are being so welcoming, so yes the flight started and ended well. I really must get over this fear of flying…

After travelling for nearly 18 hours what a welcome break Narita Airport was; although I didn’t see much of it as I hurried to get my JR Pass and head down to Tokyo.
