Travel guide to Lynton
Lynton, above the sea in the far northeast of Devon. is almost always associated with the village of Lynmouth below, the two being linked by a water powered funicular track as well as by steep road. Together they have been a holiday resort since Victorian times. In 1952 Lynton experienced bad flooding with deaths and there had to be substantial work done to ensure against a repeat.
This is the west end of the Exmoor National Park and the Devon section of its coast is at least as good as Somerset's. From Lynton westward there is a toll road to the monastic retreat of Lee Abbey along the gorgeous Valley of the Rocks, home to a unique herd of feral goats. Beyond are some superb Bays [Lee Bay and Woody Bay] and perhaps England's very finest stretch of coast to Heddon's Mouth. [edit text]  [editors]
