I have been zip lining once (Antigua, Guatemala), and the experience was wonderful, but I think we lucked out with a good operator.

What should you look for in terms of training? Heights? Distances? Safety equipment? I'm trying to select a location in Costa Rica, preferably in Monteverde and I see a number of options, but don't know how to compare?

We built zip-lines, "Foofie-slides", in out garden when we were kids.

It has become BIG in South Africa and they have built the longest and fastest in the world at : http://tinyurl.com/zipliner
The longest is in Alaska http://tinyurl.com/bestziplines
I assume the owner provides all the safety gear and rules.
