I'm trying to plan a backpacking trip through regions of Africa and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what areas to go to, some sources to look at, etc etc. I'm really interested in getting a view of the several difference landscapes, cultures, and everything that africa has to offer. If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated

I've been to most parts of Southern Africa up till Kenya. I can recommend the Serengeti in Tanzania/Kenya. Your interest in different cultures - Ngorrogorro crater bordering the serengeti hosts the famous Masai tirbe living as they have been all the ages. They welcome tourists to experience their ways. I know they make money from posing for pictures - i did'nt actually stop for the experience - the Serengeti was waiting. There I saw the great migration of the wildebeest.

A tip: go to game reserves. there you are likely to find tribal people along with the game experience.

I enjoyed Tanzania and Zimbabwe alot (I'm South African) the great Zambezi valley is a must see. I did a roadtrip between SA and Kenya. The change in landscape was astonishing and awe inspiring.

I would reccommend your own transport though. You could have a torrid time of it if you have to rely on local transport.

i would not attempt the whole of Africa for a trip - try doing the South or the north - stay away from countries in war - check your local news.

you will never regret your trip

HI, I GUESS YOU CAN VISIT EAST AFRICA. THE CULTURES THERE OF THE MAASAI, TURKANA, BOARNA COMMUNITIES IS THRILLING. ALSO THE CULTURE OF THE SWAHILI PEOPLE IN KENAYN COAST AND ZANZIBAR ALSO IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

im pretty sure that irrespective of which part of africa youll want to visit, save probably for South Africa which has has a considerable western influence, culturally tou are bound to have a mouthful. the critical question therefore is, where will you savour the very best?

Eastern africa is home to more than 100 communities, spread over five countries, whose movement is fairly easy cause of a common market and a vision for a political federation.

Western africa is also a fairly rich cultural center, but ill admit i dont have a lot of information about it. only that most communities in eastern africa, especially of the Bantu origin attribute their ancestry to the western part of africa.
