Travel guide to Saint John

St. John Antiqua

Located in the Eastern Caribbean, Antigua is a charming island, about 14 by 11 miles wide and boasts of having 356 beaches. The local currency is EC Dollar and English is the official language.

The capital is St. John; where the white baroque towers of St. John’s Cathedral dominate nearly half of its visitor’s views when they arrive by cruise ship. The wharf has a large shopping area, complete with hotels, restaurants and casinos.

Some of the main attractions are:

Shirley heights was a gun emplacement with military buildings, from here Antigua’s most iconic view of English Harbour can be seen.

English Harbour is a natural deep-water harbour, founded by Lord Horatio Nelson.

Nelson's Dockyard National Park was the headquarters for the British Navy (Leeward Islands) until 1889.

Betty's Hope was the first large scale sugar plantation, and its success led to the island's rapid development of large-scale sugar production. [edit text] [editors]
