Khor Virap is a small village in Armenia, famous for its superbly located little monastery dating back to the 12th century, although the site includes a hole in the ground, which is believed to had been a prison in the 3rd century, where St Gregory the Illuminator was held for 13 years by King Trdat III until he was able to convert the king to Christianity in 301 and convince him to adapt Christianity as a state religion, making Armenia the very first country in the world to do so. Therefore, Khor Virap is a symbol of Armenia and its position at the foot of permanently snow-capped Mount Ararat (5,137m) is matchless. The site attracts thousands of worshipers and young Armenians at the end of their graduation. [edit text][editors]
