Yerevan is not pretty, sadly. But it is well organised, though. It was re-modelled during the Soviet era and many historical buildings were removed to give way to the over-the-top soc-realism structures. Even churches were demolished and only few remained - but again a new one has been erected. Yes, some of the buildings look nice, for what they are, and the wide avenues leave an airy, spacious feel, but the night lighting, particularly at the Republic Square, make the city look handsome. The ancient fortress of the Erebuni (ancient Yerevan's name) dating to 782 BC is nothing more than a rubble but fortunately the capital is close to the main interests of Armenia, like Echmiadzin or Khor Virap.
