Oranjestad is the capital of Aruba, the semi-independent island formerly associated with the Netherlands Antilles. It has obtained its status aparte a few years ago, operates its own government and currency, independent of Amsterdam. Almost. The centre of the capital has interesting examples of modern interpretation of seventeenth century Dutch architecture. The buildings are painted in vivid colours. The town has pleasant alleys, too and a few single storey Caribbean square houses. Oranjestad has a collection of very good restaurants and bars, and a very nice cinema playing very latest Hollywood productions. There is no nice beach directly in town, but one can admire the funky iguanas taking a break right on the rocky shores. [edit text]  [editors]
