G'day.

I often get asked by people when planning their itinerary in South Australia to include Coober Pedy.

Of course we always include Coober Pedy when heading north on the Stuart Hwy. to Ayers Rock or Alice Springs.

However if a visit to Coober Pedy is the only reason to head that far north then I suggest Andamooka as an alternative.

Having worked there myself for a short while back in the 60's I have a 'soft spot' for this place. (At that time there was no road and you had to find your own way through the sand dunes.)

That however isn't the main reason.

Andamooka is much closer to Port Augusta or Adelaide, can easily be included in a round trip that can also include the Flinders Ranges and, importantly it still is much more authentic and not as touristy as Coober Pedy.

For some Info look here: http://www.walkabout.com.au/locations/SAAndamooka.shtml

Enjoy our Outback,

Mike

G'day Mike,

The photo's on that link look indeed like Coober Pedy. Where Coober Pedy is about 850 km from Adelaide, Andamooka is about 600 km and that is still a long way for just going to a Coober Pedy like town.

I've been in Coober Pedy and it's indeed worth a visit and including the Flinders Range is also a good suggestion. Flinders is great for a few days camping trip.

Cheers

Alain
