My daughter and I are planning to spend a couple of days viewing the caves at Ellora and Ajanta (world heritage site). We are looking for sugestions of hotels/where to stay. The nearest city seems to be Aurangabad, but that is 60 miles away. Is there something closer? Should we hire a guide? Can anyone suggest the best way to tour these caves?

Thanks!

Eire

Hi Eire,

I haven't been to Ajanta-Ellora, but from all the reading and what I've got from my friends it seems like Aurangabad is the best place to stay overnight for a visit to these caves. (I would presume aurangabad is the closest and most convenient place for lodging)

Most tourist packages devote only 1 day to these caves. Personal suggestions would be to have a guide and also reserve a room at Aurangabad.

Here are some links (if you haven't already seen them :)) that might be of help.

Unless Ravi has some other suggestions.

Happy Planning!!

The only hotel I know of in Ellora is Hotel Kailas

If you go to Ajanta, you might like to stay in Jalgaon. It also has a train station and Mumbai and Kolkata trains stop here.

Jalgaon had several hotels:

Hotel Plaza, Station Rd

Silver Palace, next door to Plaza

Anjali Guesthouse, Station Rd

Hotel Galaxy, near the bus stand, 2 km from the train station

Hotel Arya, near the ckock tower, 10 mins south from the train station

Hiring a guide is something very personal. If you want that someone earns some money, by all means hire a guide.

Reading about the caves yourself will supply you with more information than the average guide will give you. If you happen to get a guide whose English is poor, and has a heavy Indian accent, you will hardly be able to understand what he says. On the other hand your guide may be a very knowledgable person.

I hope that this help. Have a great trip.

Marianne

Thank you both - this is wonderful information. We will be 12 days into our trip by this point and I think that we would be best to dedicate a full day to each set of caves. They look amazing! My daughter is a painter and I am really looking forward to seeing the murals! I don't want to rush things. We fly home immedately afterwards.

Thanks!

Eire
