Hi Globies

Question to our Australia experts:

Great Barrier Reef must be THE place to snorkel.

Where is the best place to snorkel fort a budget

traveller with easy and cheap access...

Thanks

Wojtek

Hi there,

I would say the Whitsunday Islands.

It is much cheaper than going out from further north such as Cairns.

The islands and reefs here are close to Airlie Beach on the mainland and it is possible to camp on some them such as Long Island. If you don't want to camp stay on the mainland & do day trips as once you are on an island you pay triple the price for the pleasure.

Friends of mine have stayed on Heron Island really cheap but I think that that may have changed as when I just checked their website P&O now operate it at $230 twin share with full board.

I personally don't think the southern end of the Reef compares to the middle or northern end of the reef.

Good luck!

Kerrie

Hi Wojtek,

I second Whitsundays islands.

It is cheaper and just as good if not better than diving from Cairns. I've stayed in Airlie Beach too. It is a great place to be diving from.

But keep in mind: if you do the westcoast... go to Ningaloo reef too. Check my own website or ask using mail if you need any other details!

Cheers,

Maurice
