How to explore Australian Kununurra?

Seems to be interesting... Years ago it was hard accessible, expensive and difficult to explore. Car rental companies refused to rent a compact car for Darwin - Broome route. How it looks now?. Are main roads improoved? Stop suggestions? Special attractions?
