Hi all,

Heading to Bali Sept & planning on going over to Lombok & the Gilis for approx a week.

I have heard Dengue Fever is really prevalent & (some) malaria. Anyone know anything?

Also, anyone been to Lombok & the Gilis lately? Can you recommend any good dive outfits, accommodation and which Gili Island is the best to hang out on?

Thanks for any input.

Cheers,

Kerrie

Hy

Yes there is a problem with the dengyfever, but if you use autan anti Moskito the problem is gone. Malaria is not a lot but even for that you can use authan. I dont dive so I dont know the best spots, but for hanging arount is the sengigi beach in Lombok a good one.

Have a nice day

Maya

One of not too commercials island of all gilis islands is Gili meno, ive been all gilis but I recommend you to go Gili meno. Meno island its quite different then other gilis, we call it 'honeymoon' island since its the right place to stay relax though the facilities is minimum. all gilis offers snorkeling etc by boat but actually they take you to Gili Meno to do all the activity, so why don’t you go stright to the place, instead of going around first, though the facilies its not as good from others gilis but you can have all gilis sight view only at Gili Meno, start from Meno wall (spot for snorkeling use by all gilis islands),bird park, cidomo ride (horse cart ride), to small lake…

When I stayed at at gili meno I choose small cottage there, which quite far from commercials area of gili meno, I need privacy, you know, the rate is Rp 100.000, arround US$10,at 'Biru Meno' (thats what we call for the place). if you looking for private spot without annoy by girls or boy who sell soouvenirs etc, try the place. [b][There you will serve as a old friend, not a guest.

One time , the owner (Gde wirawan -the owner- was a staff for years on cruise company and stays at europe for several years too) wake the guest up in the middle of the night and ask to go out to the beach with him,We finds out that he just want to show us the new baby born turtle which seems lost its way to the beach and stop by near the fence of the cottage. other time he bangs the table with the bottle of beers because some salesman dear enter the dinning table just to sell some saroong for us, he warns to the salesman that he may sell everything (only) out of 'Biru Meno' property. he states his principle where 'Biru Meno' (his place) its not a market where sales meet buyer, but its his own homestay with his guest. since, he is a good friend to talk, he have this habbit at the evening to have some chat with all his guest, just to know each other with guitar and play some song,he really know how to build home stay feeling for us,but you may not joint the 'evening meeting' if you feel dont want to. He also have recommendation for best massage serve by an old man he use to have, because sometimes when you take massage service from women offers you at the beach, for the 1st 10 minutes(after it finish its ok ) but half an hour latter you will feel more pain. Sometimes he even help lost expatriate with small budget to stay for free or he help us to find/bargain cheapest price (local price-usualy the put higher price for touris)

When you arrive at Gili Meno and feels so disturbing of people offers you place to stay and other service, just say : "no thanks, i want to see my friend 'Gde from Biru meno", and they will let you free." , Thats what i always do when i get there, or ask them to Biru Meno and they will show you the way. Remember, its 10 minutes walk from commercials area of gili meno, since the place stands at the best spot of beach view and everything of Meno island, so... be kindly to walk a little bit. more info of transport and anything, call me at +62 81584242432,or mail to margaretha_nancy@yahoo.com, nancy-margaretha.ext_dge@siemens.com, information is free,

I just got back from Gili Trawangan. I was hesitant about it because of it's party reputation but it turned out great. I was traveling alone and it was a perfect balance for me. Yes, the party scene is there for those who want to stay out til 4 but there was a nice balance of people who did not partake at all and were there for the diving. I really enjoyed being able to go out and meet all kinds of interesting travelers and have a few drinks and then head back before midnight. You can take or leave the party there and thats what I liked. I don't want to travel alone and be on a honeymoon island. So I would recommend Trawangan if you are traveling alone. But I will say all of the islands are so close that you can visit them all for day trips. Air is supposed to be nice and more tranquil than Trawangan and Meno very remote (no electricity) I heard. So it depends on what you are looking for.

As for the diving outfits. They are all about the same on a professioal level and all the same price. I chose Dive Indonesia...it seemed less congested.

I stayed at Emalia's. Great locationnext to Trawangan Beach Club. 50,000 rp per night including brakfast.

Hi there,

Thanks for all the info.

I have just got back & this is my first log on in 2 weeks.

Flygal you must be looking for the same things as me as I stayed on Gili Trawangan the whole time & loved it. Day 1 all the locals wanted to help (& I mean help not hassle), day 2 they all know you, day 3 everyone is your best friend & by the end of your stay they all come out to say bye & come again.

Nancym thanks for the huge post. I wish I had read it before I went....

I didn't get to Meno but dived off Air & loved it.

I wish I was still there, I really loved it.

Cheers,

Kerrie
