Based in old Siberian city of Tobolsk I decided to see two orthodox monasteries located close to. Alla -the charming local lady offered me a ride on her car. I was very happy because local transport in such remote places is infrequent. Heading to Abalak we made stopover at the female's Ioanno-Viedenskij Monastery. After long period of total closure during the communist period most of old monasteries is under restoration. In my opinion tha main problem is how to fill them with nuns and monks after such a long period of atheism... Abalak male monastery - some 25 kms from Tobolsk has even nicer location on the high cliff overlooking Irtysh river. There are three churches inside. One of them is housing renowned for miracles icon of Mother of God. Great atmosphere, people are bringing tiny candles. We took 249 steps to get down to the river - for another great view. Back in Tobolsk Alla gave me a lesson how to fry traditional Russian pancakes (bliny).
