Self drive in Sri Lanka

I know that it is possible to rent a car there but I am wondering if anyone has done so or is it recommended to take a car & driver? We prefer to be independent and have driven on Bali, Lombok, Thailand and many other places so don't find it daunting. Thanks, Kerrie --- Where to next? It is also a good way to come into contact with local people. When you hire a car and driver you just see the same person all day during your travel.
