For mainland china I enjoyed Beijing more than Shanghai. I found Shanghai more polluted, very busy, with lots of people on the go day and night. Beijing is a better tourist location and if you have a choice of only one city to visit I would suggest Beijing. But if I was ever considering living there I would have to live in Hong Kong.
