Hi there,

I am currently heading south from Bangkok. I did read on lots of great GLOBO reports about amazing beaches in the south.

Whats your favourite spot in Thailand? Let me know about your favourite beach and I will check it out. Bangkok is a crazy place! To bad I have only 2 weeks in Thailand so I have to set of for the beaches definatelly :-)) I did read also about fine silk clothes in Bangkok. Any recommendations on that?

What a place!

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Andy!

If you are looking for an island...

Ko Samui and Phuket are crowded, with nice beaches but it seems to be islands for old people.

Kho phi phi is really nice but overcrowded.

Kho Tao if you want to do snorkelling or scuba diving.

Kho Phangan have great beaches, cheap and not so crowded except Hat Rin beach with the full moon party.

Kho Chang and Kho Lanta are still islands to enjoy without too much people but also with less facilities.

For me the best choose is Kho Chang, Kho Lanta or Kho PhanGan.

Dani!

thanx Dani. I thing I will start with Ko Samui and make some island hopping. Kho Chang sounds nice.

Did you take the bus or the train down south? The people in the booking agencies keep telling that the best way to get from Bangkok to Ko Samui is by V.I.P. Bus which is including the ferry about 650 Bath. Train seems much more complicated since you have to watch out for the right station and pay extra for ferry and transfer bus. I remember that I met a guy in Cape Tribulation , Australia that travelling by train is much better. What do u think?

Andy

PS: Thanx for your great recommendations in your report on Thailand

Hi Andy!

Well, i don´t know the price Bangkok-Ko Samui.

But i Did Bangkok-Surat Thani by train + Surat Thani-Krabi by bus + Krabi-Kho Phi Phi island by Ferry and all this was 750,-Bahts.

I know that the Train Bangkok-Surat Thani costs 388,-Bahts in an Upper Bed and second class. Really good attending at the 12 hours of way by night.

Dept-Arriv = 18:20 - 06:32

I can't remember the price from Kho PhanGan to Bangkok but the ferry from the island to Surat Thani was 6 hours stoping in Ko Samui (From Ko Samui probably 4. ¿?) and Surat Thani to Bangkok by "Deluxe" bus was also 12 hours including 2 horrible Stalone DVD movies.

Well, in my opinion travel by train is ever more comfortable even if you will take a night trip.

Ask for a train-transfer bus-Ferry, maybe it can be also possible. ¿?¿?

Or if you are ok travelling by bus, no problem, is a pleasant way cause the roads are great in Thailand.

650,-Bahts is around 16 Euros/Usd$ ... not so bad for a really long distance and 3 different transportations.

Hope it helps!

Dani!

Hi Danni,

I did take the V.I.P. Bus (What a name!) to Ko Samui. After returning to Kao San road I found a bargain with 400 Bath including the ferry! It cant get cheeper and the Journey was really great. It was over in no time because the bus was so comfy that one could easily sleap the whole journey.

So.. jeah! Ko Samui is great, but you are right a bit overcrowded and to touristy. They even have 2 Mac Donalds here! Can you believe that somebody eats in there when they have the choice for awesome Thai food?!!

However I will be off to Ko Penjang tomorrow *if I can push myself out of my beach hat :-)

Thanx for your tips,

Andy

Hello Andy!

Long time no see! Doesn't seem that long ago that you were in Hong Kong. I hope you recovered from the crowds and noise we had to walk through in TST (Tsim Tsa Tsui) when you came through Hong Kong in the fall!

Anyway, I'm so glad you are having some fun in Thailand! I'm going to be there next week for a few days in Bangkok and then Ko Samui and Ko Phangan for a well-needed beach holiday. How's the weather?? After living/working in Hong Kong these past few months...Thailand seems like a great place to rejuvenate and relax.

Please post any tips you have for my upcoming trip...I'm hot on your trail!

Hi Hially,

woww! Too bad we will miss. I will be off to Frankfurt on the 29.1 in Bangkok just before you arrive I guess. Would be good to see you again.

For your trip...

I did go to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan before I went to Koh Pih Pih. Koh Samui seems to be more for the older crowed since there is an airport and lots of nonbackpackers fly in. Koh Phengan on the other side has lots of young crowd and is more a place to relax from all the crowds. You will find 2 Mac Donalds, 1 Burger King and a Starbucks in Ban Chaweng on Koh Samui... I guess this speeks for itself!! To much development. If you know where to go, there are still a couple of good places to go on Koh Samui. Read on to learn where I have been.

My suggestion:

Get a minibus from the ferry *50 Bath* to Ban Chaweng and jump off at Charlies Hut. This is an awesome place if you do not need first class accomodation. They have loveley Beach Huts made out of Bambooh, clean and with mosquito net. If you are lucky you will get one of the ones right at the beach. I slept in 31 which is awesome!! Right at the beach with a Hamock infront of the Beach Hut. It costs 300 Bath. *You will not get it cheaper in Ban Chaweng*

Walk on the beach and not on the street and go further up at nighttime where the lights are. There are some awesome restaurants right on the beach with loveley mats at the water and small tables. They play relaxing Thai music and you will get the best Coconut shake in town directly mixed into the coconut!!!

For Koh Phangan..

this place is more for relaxing and "smoking" Dont get the minibus from the ferry, since it costs you 30 bath and takes you as far as a 5 minute walk! This is just a tourist rip off. Get off the ferry and walk just straight through the town to the beach. Prices varry deaply as standards do. So find a place that suits you. You can get an even better *though different* coconut shake there (I am really into that shakes :-))

Koh Tao is for snorkeling and diving. A good trip would take you from Bangkok via V.I.P Bus and ferry to Koh Samui for 400 *at Koh San road agencies* and a ferry to Koh Phangan for 100. Then Koh Tao and then by Ferry to the mainland *cant remember the name* and the back to Bangkok. I should have done that.

Right now I am in Koh Pih Pih and it is sooooooo expensive *800+* and toooo touristy. However... amazing nature.

Hope that helps a bit. Let me know if you are in Bangkok on the 28 or 29 so we could meet up?!

Thanx again for showing me around in Hong Kong!!

Cu,

Andy

Hello again Andy!

Thanks for your tips about travelinig to Bangkok, Ko Samui, etc. It would have been cool to meet up again but, sadly, I won't be in Bangkok in time to meet you! Darn. Oh well. I'm really looking forward to my adventures in Thailand. I've decided to visit Ko Tao too now that I've heard that it's good for snorkelling.

Oh, and you are most welcome for the Hong Kong tour. I am ready to get out of this place this week though!!!

Hope you had a great holiday!!!
