2 women travelling alone South America - Advice!

I have heard mixed things - would love some advice from women that have done it! We encountered the typical machismo but nothing out of the ordinary. Traveling on the Inka Trail does require being with a group. They didn't reported any problems on the road. You just have to be careful like in other places. Generally big cities in South America are less safe for travellers.
