Gravensteen - Castle of the Counts

Gent [Dutch,] Gand [French,] or Ghent [English], though it gets a considerable number of visitors may be overshadowed somewhat by its proximity to Brugge/Bruges and Antwerp[en.]
It should be regarded as their equal in its appeal to visitors. It is not' like Brugge, a medieval city caught in a time warp but rather a modern city with interesting remains from all periods.
The Graslei and Korenlei riverside buildings are best viewed first from one of the historic boat rips that depart frequently.
The Castle of the Counts looks like a children's fairytale castle and the three tremendous towers, seen on numerous postcards, of St Nicholas, the cathedral and the Belfroi indicate other must-see buildings. There's actually a lift in the belfroi if you can get as far as the first floor.
The museum of folklore, oce almshouses and next a children's home can be warmly recommended. [www.huisvanalijn.be]
