Travel guide to Mechelen
Mechelen, like Leuven, is a city in Flanders which is a bit overshadowed by its proximity to other more famous cities; particularly to Antwerp, but also to Ghent, Bruges and Brussels.
It has one monument that is absolutely distinctive. This is the cathedral, with a very high tower, which clearly has the characteristics of a stump.
Over 97 metres is certainly a high stump, but the tower was originally designed to reach 160 metres! In general the Cathedral, started in the 14th century is a most impressive building and would justify a visit to the city on its own.
However, you should also see the Town Hall, The late Gothic and early Renaissance palace of Margaret of Austria, Regent of the Netherlands [then including Belgium] in the time of Mechelen's proudest period, the 16th century.
Some of the historic looking houses are acually reconstructions after terrible war damage. [edit text]  [editors]
