Because Ghent and Bruges have numerous historic sights and are quite close together, some people expect them to be similar. This is a mistake. Bruges is more or less a medieval town caught in a time warp. Ghent is a town which has been highly industrial and had its share of the industrial revolution, with buildings of all sorts of times spread along its waterfront. Both places are well worth a stay in their own right.
Ghent's earliest building on the famous sretch of river in the centre is Romanesque, now a restaurant but originally concerned with the corn staple for Belgium.
From the river the view of the three towers of the Cathedral, the Belfry and St Nicholas is one of the best known. There are great museums, some sounding unlikely such as the Folk Museum or the design Museum, both of which are extremely interesting.
