San Ignacio makes a great home base for exploration of the Mayan Mountains, also known as Mountain Pine Ridge. The town itself is a frontier station for surrounding lodges that line the many rivers throughout the mountains. From here one can easily explore the Mayan caves, filled with pottery and skeletons still intact. Jaguar Paw Caves, Rio Frio Caves, Barton Creek and others are all an easy drive from San Ignacio. This region is also home to some stunningly beautiful waterfalls. Big Rock Falls, Five Sisters, 1,000 Foot Falls (which is actually 1,600 feet) and Rio Pools areall nearby, just to name a few. There are also a number of Mayan ruins in the area: Caracol, Xunantunich and El Pilar are close by San Ignacio. Ix Chel Farms, a well known research center for natural healing and herbal medicines, is a fascinating stop. Also worth seeing are several butterfly farms close to San Ignacio. All this makes San Ignacio a terrific base piont for a Belizian adventure! [edit text][editors]
