" Other cities have universities, Marburg IS a university" is a saying that decribes this picturesque town in the North of the German state of Hesse perfectly.
A town since 1140, a quarter of the ca. 85,000 inhabitants are students and university staff. Philipp's University, the oldest Protestant university in the world, was founded in 1527.
Spending time in Marburg is like travelling back in time - the Gothic Old Town hasn't changed much since the Brothers Grimm, Clemens Brentano, Achim and Bettina von Arnim and Martin Luther wandered around the cobblestone streets and climbed the many stairs that lead up to its crowning glory, the landgrave castle.
