Ghanzi is bushmen country, a part of Botswana that was inhabited by the San people or bushmen, forced to exist in the desert. Even though they are now nearly all gone and the young ones no longer practice their traditons.
It is located in the western part of Botswana a couple of hours from Namibia border and skirts the Kalahari Desert. To get there one must travel through miles and miles of unchanging scenery – as far as the eye can see the yellow of the dried shrubs.
Cattle are reared in the area and it represents 6% of the country’s total herds resulting in the main employee. A few years back Botswana’s cattle suffer From Foot And Mouth disease and now tight controls are manned to monitor the flow between high risk areas and low ones; and vehicles are regularly searched and passengers are required to cross a disinfectant mat.
